Queensland public holiday fast answers

The most common questions about QLD public holidays — answered in plain English.

How many public holidays does QLD have in 2026?

Queensland has 12 statewide public holidays in 2026, plus Christmas Eve as a part-day (6pm–midnight). Brisbane area employees additionally get the Ekka holiday on Wednesday 12 August.

Does QLD get a substitute day for Anzac Day on Saturday?

No. In 2026, Anzac Day falls on Saturday — Queensland provides no substitute. A substitute Monday is only given when Anzac Day falls on a Sunday (as in 2027). Check your award for Saturday public holiday entitlements in 2026.

When is Labour Day in Queensland?

The first Monday in May. In 2026: Monday 4 May. In 2027: Monday 3 May. QLD observes Labour Day in May — unlike VIC/ACT (March) or NSW (October).

What is the Ekka holiday and who gets it?

The Royal Queensland Show (Ekka) holiday falls on the Wednesday of the RNA Show in August — Brisbane area only. 2026: Wed 12 Aug. 2027: Wed 11 Aug. Employees outside Brisbane observe a different regional show holiday.

Is Christmas Eve a public holiday in QLD?

Yes — but only a part-day from 6pm to midnight on 24 December. Employees working shifts that cross 6pm are entitled to public holiday rates for the portion after 6pm. It is not a full day off.

What do you get paid for working a public holiday in QLD?

Most awards pay 225% (double time and a quarter) for working on a public holiday. If you don’t work, you receive your ordinary rate. Use the Public Holiday Rate Calculator for your exact rate.

When is King’s Birthday in Queensland?

The first Monday in October. In 2026: Monday 5 October. In 2027: Monday 4 October. Unlike NSW and VIC which observe it in June, and WA which observes it in September.

What if a public holiday falls during my annual leave?

A public holiday during approved annual leave is not deducted from your leave balance — you receive the public holiday in addition. This right is protected under section 116 of the Fair Work Act 2009. Use the Annual Leave Calculator to check your balance.

Does QLD have Easter Saturday as a public holiday?

No — QLD has “the day after Good Friday” which falls on the Saturday, but it is not called Easter Saturday. QLD does not have a separate Easter Saturday provision like NSW. The practical effect is the same date, but the legislative basis differs.

Detailed answers on Queensland public holidays, pay entitlements and QLD-specific rules.

What are the Queensland public holidays in 2026?

The 2026 Queensland public holidays are: New Year’s Day (Thu 1 Jan), Australia Day (Mon 26 Jan), Good Friday (Fri 3 Apr), The day after Good Friday (Sat 4 Apr), Easter Sunday (Sun 5 Apr), Easter Monday (Mon 6 Apr), Anzac Day (Sat 25 Apr, no substitute), Labour Day (Mon 4 May), Royal Queensland Show/Ekka (Wed 12 Aug, Brisbane only), King’s Birthday (Mon 5 Oct), Christmas Eve part-day (Thu 24 Dec, 6pm–midnight), Christmas Day (Fri 25 Dec), Boxing Day substitute (Mon 28 Dec). Why does Queensland observe Labour Day in May?

Queensland’s Labour Day date has changed several times through history. It currently falls on the first Monday in May under the Holidays Act 1983 as amended in 2015, effective from 2016. Before that, QLD had briefly moved it to October. NSW observes Labour Day in October, VIC, ACT and SA observe it in March. The different dates reflect each state’s separate legislative history around the eight-hour day movement.

Is Anzac Day a public holiday if it falls on Saturday in QLD?

Yes, the Saturday itself is a public holiday — but Queensland does not provide a substitute Monday when Anzac Day falls on a Saturday. In 2026, Anzac Day is Saturday 25 April with no Monday substitute. A substitute is only provided when Anzac Day falls on a Sunday (as in 2027, where Monday 26 April is the observed holiday). Check your modern award for Saturday penalty rate entitlements if you work that day.

How does the Christmas Eve part-day public holiday work?

The Christmas Eve part-day holiday runs from 6pm to midnight on 24 December under the Holidays Act 1983 (introduced 2019). If your shift begins before 6pm and continues past that point, you are entitled to public holiday rates for the portion from 6pm onwards. If your entire shift falls after 6pm, the whole shift attracts public holiday rates. If you finish before 6pm, no public holiday applies. This is unique to Queensland.

Do all Queensland employees get the Ekka holiday?

No. The Ekka holiday on the Wednesday in August applies only to employees in the Brisbane area. Other Queensland regions observe their own local agricultural show holiday on a different date — sometimes weeks apart from the Brisbane Ekka. Check the Queensland Government show holiday dates page for your specific region.

Can my employer ask me to work on a Queensland public holiday?

Under section 114 of the Fair Work Act 2009, an employer can request an employee to work on a public holiday, but the employee may refuse if the request is not reasonable. A refusal is reasonable if, for example, you have carer responsibilities, the day has cultural or religious significance, or insufficient notice was given. If you work, you are entitled to the penalty rates in your modern award — typically 225% of your ordinary rate.

What happens to QLD public holidays falling on weekends?

Under the Holidays Act 1983, Queensland provides substitute public holidays when Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year’s Day falls on a weekend — the next available weekday is observed. Australia Day is observed the following Monday if it falls on a weekend. For Anzac Day: a substitute Monday is provided only when it falls on a Sunday; there is no substitute when it falls on a Saturday.

Dates sourced from qld.gov.au (updated 16 January 2026). Queensland public holidays are governed by the Holidays Act 1983. The Royal Queensland Show (Ekka) holiday applies to Brisbane area only — other regions observe their local show holiday on a different date. The Christmas Eve part-day holiday applies from 6pm to midnight only.
